Some of the great sights of China are the water townships. There are eight around Shanghai alone, and many more in the rest of the country. One of the most famous is Zhouzhuang which claims to be over 1000 years old. These aquatic cities - like Venice - have been revered for centuries and thus it is no surprise that they became part of the currency of the China Trade.
